Epsom College 11 Plus School Admissions
(from school website)
Our admissions process is designed to be as stress-free as possible (for the child and family alike) and to help us identify the potential in every applicant.
We are not an academic hothouse. Instead, we are looking for children whose talents stretch beyond the confines of the curriculum and who will contribute to the rich life of the College and our community.
This is why we don’t simply make our offers on the strength of entrance exam alone. We interview every child before the exams are sat, and take into consideration their personalities, talents, and school reference, alongside how they perform in the January tests.
31 October, Year 6: Registration deadline
If you would like your child to be considered for a day place in Year 7 you must complete the registration form and pay a non-refundable registration fee of £150 before the closing date of 31 October in Year 6.
Please note: applications for 2021 entry are now closed.
Year 6 Interview
All registered applicants will have a short interview, usually no longer than 15 minutes. These always take place before exams are sat.
We do this because we feel it’s important for your child to meet the staff and have the chance to become familiar with the College. We also want to meet your child and find out more about them than we can learn from assessments alone.
The ‘interview’ is actually more of a chat; a chance for us to get to know your child a little. We understand the competitive nature of applying for schools, but would advise against coaching for interviews – we far prefer to see the child’s true interests and personality.
Epsom College 11 Plus Entrance Exams
Your child will be invited to attend either a morning or afternoon session between 5-8 January 2022. You will be informed of your exact time and date toward the end of the autumn term.
Each child will sit four papers:
- Verbal Reasoning (50 minutes)
- Non-Verbal Reasoning (35 minutes)
- Creative Writing (30 minutes)
- Mathematics (30 minutes)
Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning
It’s a good idea for your child to familiarise themselves with the multiple-choice format of these tests, and to see some examples of the type of questions they will face.
Our verbal and non-verbal reasoning papers are set by GL Assessments.
Creative Writing & Maths
These papers are set by our own Heads of Department.
Academic scholarships are awarded on the strength of your child’s entrance exams, interview and school references. No additional exams are required.
A separate assessment is required to be considered for a scholarship in Performing Arts (Drama or Music) or Sport.
Year 6 Places offered
Once all entrance and scholarship assessments have concluded, we evaluate every candidate’s performance. To do this we look at:
- performance in the entrance exams/scholarship assessments
- how they came across in the autumn interview
- school references and reports
We also consider the make up of the year group as a whole, ensuring a good balance of personalities, interests and talents. This is a vital part of the process, as it is important for children to thrive as part of a happy, well-balanced community.
Places will be offered in mid-February and parents have one month in which to make their decision.
